Who is Dr. Jean Valnet “The Practice of Aromatherapy”?

Jean Valnet was a medical doctor in Paris, France. He was also an army physician and surgeon. He experimented with essential oils in the post World War II years, and established amazing results. Dr. Jean was born on July 26, 1920 in Châlons-sur-Marne. Jean Valnet was a pioneer in the field of aromatherapy. Doctor Jean along with Rene Maurice Gattefosse can be called as the founder of modern aromatherapy.

Early Medical Life: Doctor Jean was trying to prove the nature and uses of essential oils in scientific terms.  He started this attempt in the year 1948. He also worked on the therapeutic properties and values of essential oils in everyday medicine. He pursued École Du Service De Santé Militaire et Faculté De Médecine in Lyon and graduated as a doctor of Psychiatry, Microbiology, Colonial Medicine and Surgery in 1945. Jean created his own blends with the essential oils and constantly made an attempt to establish their uses.

Jean’s Military Career: Jean Valnet was an army physician and surgeon in the military. He had a distinguished military career, fighting with the resistance group Brutus in Lyon in 1942. Jean also assisted the Chief of the Surgical Services in 1944 – 45. Till 1948, he was acting as the Physician of the Military Special school of Saint-Cyr. Doctor Jean Valnet was the chief physician to the Secretary of war from 1953 – 59. For all his hard work and perspiration, he was awarded the Légion d’Honneur and the Croix De Guerre (Six Citations). These awards came his way mainly because of his actions with the resistance during the 1939 – 45 war.

New Surgery Center: Doctor Valnet left the army in the year 1959. He soon became a civil physician in Paris, setting up his surgery center on the Avenue Kléber. He practiced and refined his theory of medicine of the total man founded on the therapeutic natural, synergies, active and bereft of harmful secondary effects in this place. He published and explained his theories in various publications, books and medical journals over the next 50 years. Many updates were made to his work till the year 1992.

Doctor Jean’s works: Aromatherapy, treatment of the illnesses by the essences of plants (1st edition 1964 11th and last edition 1989) – Health by fruits, vegetables and cereals (1st edition 1967 – 9th and last edition 1985) – Doctor Nature (1st edition 1971 – 2nd and last edition 1980) – Herbal medicine, treatment of the illnesses by the plants (1st edition 1972 – 6th and last édition1992). These notable works made Doctor Jean very famous and world renowned medical practitioner.

Jean’s love and passion for essential oils:
The “International Center of Biologic Research” made Doctor Jean Valnet the corresponding member of this unit in 1961 at Geneva. Doctor Jean presented many lectures and essays on the properties and credentials of essential oils. His love and passion for the benefits of essential oils made him connect to the study of the anti-infectious properties of the essential oils and their types of action.

Doctor Jean’s invention: Along with Doctor Maurice Girault of Dijon, Dr. Jean Valnet invented the term of antibio-aromatogramme. This term was used to symbolize a particular Antibiogram. Antibiogram is nothing but the result of a laboratory testing for the sensitivity of an isolated bacterial strain to different antibiotics. This was treated with aromatic gases, instead of being treated with the classic antibiotics.

Doctor Jean Valnet passed away on May 29, 1995 at Vulaines-sur-Seine.
